FAQ's on Import-Export Code
Your Questions Answered
What is the Import-Export Code (IEC) and why is it mandatory?
The IEC is a 10-digit unique code issued by the DGFT. It is a mandatory requirement for any person or business entity that intends to engage in import or export activities in India (importing goods or services, or making/receiving foreign currency payments related to international trade).
Who is exempt from obtaining an IEC?
IEC is not required if the import or export of goods is for personal use and not connected with trade, manufacture, or agriculture. It is also not required for government ministries/departments or certain exempted categories of notified persons.
Which applicant's details are used to issue the IEC?
The IEC is linked to the applicant's Permanent Account Number (PAN). For a Proprietorship, the IEC is issued against the proprietor's PAN. For a Company, LLP, or Partnership Firm, the IEC is issued against the entity's PAN.
What is the current process for applying for a new IEC?
The entire process is now online through the DGFT portal. The application is filed in Form ANF-2A. It is auto-generated instantly upon successful submission and payment, as the IEC is the same as the applicant's PAN.
Is there an annual renewal or compliance fee for the IEC?
While the IEC is valid for the lifetime of the entity, it requires annual compliance. The IEC holder must ensure the details are updated electronically (e-KYC) between April and June every year. Failure to update will lead to the deactivation of the IEC.
What key documents are required for IEC registration?
The primary requirements are: 1) Applicant's PAN (or entity PAN). 2) Proof of establishment (e.g., Certificate of Incorporation, Partnership Deed). 3) Proof of address (for the office). 4) A cancelled cheque or bank certificate showing the business name and bank account details.
Can an IEC be used for both importing and exporting?
Yes. A single IEC is sufficient and covers both import and export transactions (for both goods and services). There is no need for separate import and export codes.
What is the penalty for non-compliance (failure to update) of the IEC?
If the IEC is not updated annually during the April-June window, the DGFT will deactivate the code. The IEC can be reactivated by updating the details later, but the business may face operational difficulties or be unable to clear shipments while the IEC is deactivated.
